For the move afficionado, nothing beats the raw impact of a projector. The mere act of dimming the lights primes your brain to release yourself from reality and focus on the experience that's about to unfold. If you're looking to increase and enhance your viewing experience, please do have a look in the direction of the Sony WPL-HW45ES - This competitively priced projector punches well above its weight.

This Full HD, 3D capable Projector offers you a beautifully balanced picture, allowing you to easily attain a crisp, vibrant image well above the magic 100 inches. It's warm and captivating presence in your theatre will have guests talking and keep you enthralled for movie marathons, grand finals or even binge watching reality cooking shows. We won't judge.

It boasts a raft of features painstakingly invented by the lads in marketing - Reality Creation, MotionFlow, and a 1.6:1 zoom lens with H/V lens shift. B.S. aside, I just really like how movies look on it.

This is our pick if you want a projector to start building a great home cinema experience. Price for performance, it's a hard one to top.

  • Epson TW9300 LCD Video Projector

This hot hatch of mid range video projectors is very bright and powerful. It has been getting outstanding reviews from the critics for its forceful bright image and versatility.

The 9300 has a couple of outstanding characteristics in the Australian market ... it has a full three year warranty that uniquely includes the globe, and replacement globes are only $110 trade ...

Larger than its Sony competitors and not quite as smooth an image, but excellent for a theatre situation with some residual light, good adjustability and set up options.

  • Sony VPL-HW65ES Video Projector ... "What Hi Fi?" projector of the year

This is the model that uses Sonys SXRD three chip technology in the sweet spot for good quality domestic theatre systems. While the VPL320 is a stretch over $10,000 and the VPL40 is terrific value at less than $4k, the VPL65 fills in the gaps in the subtle but important visual performance issues that the lower model misses out on.

Viewing the Force Awakens through the VPL65 is an engrossing experience even for a unit straight out of the box. The movie is a love affair with different geographies and this projector conveys the individual scenes just excellently. Daisy Ridley in closeup is exposed not only of her youthful beauty but also of her human flaws of complexion that actually bring her to life on the screen.

And then there's the blacks ...  I confess I find the space borne sound effects of Star Wars really annoying but the image of the giant star cruiser blocking out the stars and planet is deeply compelling with this device.

We also tried the classic Batman the Dark Night scene from Hong Kong where he dives between skyscrapers at night in Hog Kong. Many projectors are reduced to black cat on a moonless night by this scene but the VPL65 handles it really well for its price point.

  • Wolf Cinema SDC-6

We have been running Tom Cruise in Oblivion on this projector in 2.35:1. It is a difficult movie with lots of dark Icelandic landscape pans interspersed flaming action in dark confined spaces. The Wolf SDC6 does it brilliantly. This is a serious small form factor video projector that is all about visual dynamism and like a high end sports vehicle makes few concessions to creature comforts in set up. In a planned installation the image quality punches way above the price tag.

The SDC-6 created a buzz at CES, where people were praising its impressive picture quality at an extremely reasonable price point. We've been keen to get out hands on one ever since. A two piece design keeps the connections and the processing back in the rack, with a single digital cable running up to the projectors head end.
