  • Monitor Audio Bronze 1

They may be small, but they don't sound that way. There is an astonishing level of detail to be found for a speaker in this price range. A gold domed tweeter provided that sizzle in the top end while a new dust cap free bass driver does the rest. It's quite astonishing what you can get for so little money these days, even comparing against the entry point monitor audios of years gone by. Very well put together too.

  • Cambridge Audio Aero2

What the hell is BMR I hear you ask. A Balance Mode Radiator looks like a big flat tweeter - in a way thats basically what it is. But it brings with it a host of sonic benefits, like a really low crossover point, and excellent dispersion. What does that mean? It's a big sound from a small package, with a wonderfully natural midrange and great sound staging. You know - everything you want in a neatly presented and inexpensive bookshelf 'speaker! Combining a 2.25" BMR (Balanced Mode Radiator) driver and 6" woofer, these are the little speakers that make a big sound. But don't make the mistake of thinking them brash. Learn More

  • Monitor Audio Radius 90 Ultra compact Speaker

The Radius 90 is a radical departure from most satellite speakers in as much as it doesn't look radical. It's a high-class mini monitor, only smaller. In stark contrast to the hard, cold metal appearance of most A/V speaker packages, it has the same sumptuous lacquer finishes that grace Monitor Audio's reference speakers. The same engineering standards and attention to detail, too, right down to the radiused corners of the cabinet and high-quality, gold-plated cable terminals. Learn More

  • Legend Acoustics Joey 7 ... now tuned in price and componentry

The Joeys are the babies of Legend Acoustics' Kangaroo range, These are the latest incarnation of Dr Crawfords mini speakers and they are fantastic with appropriate amplification.

I love them with a Rega Brio R from the idiosyncratic UK company. It goes to show that the best most musical pieces of kit are firmly based on passionate individuals such as Rod Crawford and Roy Gandy. Do not be deceived by their initially humble but cool form factor appearence. These tots feel like they are constructed of solid concrete.

There is no ... I mean really none at all ... other speaker of this size and solidity thats not more than double the money in the local market. With their fast, open natural sound – and are still designed & built in Australia. Within their band-width of 50 Hz to 20 kHz, the Joeys are very faithful to the signal fed to them. Given well-recorded music through high quality front-end electronics, the Joeys will sound simply superb.

Inside, the cabinets have internal surfaces which are non-parallel that, together with Australian wool batts, minimize internal standing waves that muddle sound. And a knuckle-rap test will quickly show they are built like Hitler's bunkhouse to eliminate cabinet resonances that will also reduce clarity; while their unique stretched Lycra grille produces minimal effect on tonal balance.

  • Krix Acoustix MK2

Versatility. That's the by word here. Krix's award winning bookshelf speaker has all the weight and presence of some competitor's floor standers, but still come in this lovely compact(ish) oblong case. The forward porting makes installation into cabinets easy without falling into the trap of port chuffing or booming that can be common in rear ported speakers. Oh, and they sound damn good too. While there's lots of detail to be had, they may not have the delicacy and ultra resolution of some competitors. What they do have is rhythm, pace and slam that a speaker on a stand has no right to be able to produce. The Acoustix Mk2 is simply toe tapping fun. $1545 in a real wood veneer, or save a few dollars with black vinyl wrap at $1295. Learn More
