Clarity on the 500s are not lost. The metal dome tweeter has been improved with changes to the waveguide surrounding it. The main drivers have also undergone some changes resulting in a tighter, more precise sound.

Monitor Audio Silver 100 7G from the brand new 7th generation of the ever popular Silver series. It's the big bookshelf speaker - bigger than a normal bookshelf speaker. The first design of this sort of speaker was slated as an experiment with no real expectations that it would succeed. On the contrary, the Silver 2s (as they were then known) were extremely poplular. People loved the extra bass and musical presence they possesed without the need for going to a full floorstanding speaker.

The 7th generation of these speakers draws on those winning design features tweaking things like the mid-bass drivers and the wave guide for a little extra clarity and precision.

These particular speakers are from that same school of engineering innovation that produced the Avro Vulcan and the GMA T50 but are actually far more useful ... and affordable ...

This is the gauntlet Monitor Audio are throwing down to the rest of the industry. A radical rethink of how a loudspeaker can be made so as to be a truly livable high end product.

The first time I played them with my all too familiar Johnny Cash "Hurt", I immediately recognised an extra layer of revealed detail in the upper registers. However the Hyphn can do this without being piercingly actinic like so many high end loudspeaker designs. Mr Cash simply was eloquently melancholic in a heart rending rendition of an all too familiar tune.

They are also comfortable in a real domestic environment without the listeners being forced into a super critical centrality to experience the whole performance. Many very high performance transducers are extremely critical of listening position and acoustic space, these are designed for a real living room, albeit probably rather a nice one.

One of the most anticipated pairs of speakers of recent times. The promise of that "trickle down" Platinum range technology at a much more inclusive price point had a good chunk of potential MA newbies and Silver/older Gold upgraders very excited.

There's no doubting the potential of these speakers, give them a bit of consideration when setting up, choose the right amp and speaker cable and they are beyond what would be considered high-end esoterica just 10 years ago.

As a previous "Gold" owner (GR20s, equally giant-slaying in their day), I was more excited than most to hear these and they did not disappoint. I'm a massive fan of the MPD high frequency driver, an A.M.T./Heil driver always stands out to me but can dominate a speaker design if the rest of the drive units and crossover cant keep up. Its a balance that MA demonstrated with the current Platinum range and could easily have "dropped the ball" here trying to impliment the array into a cheaper package. To MA's credit they've done a fantastic job, the little C-Cam mid-range I think is the secret to this speaker working so well.

I urge you to come and hear these speakers play back a well recorded acoustic instrument or small ensemble to really get an idea of what a modern design can acheive when it comes to nuanced reproduction.

These are the latest iteration of this big no compromise UK design. The outstanding characteristics of this speaker are the immense delicacy of the treble nature along with the massive attack offered by the exceptional bass drivers. The original Platinum 300 is still in use by many of our clients and is really hard to get a positive upgrade of. The third generation retains all those virtues of air and space with thunder but has refined and deepened the musical portrayal.
