Integrated Amplifiers

integrated amplifier

Integrated amplifiers are what most people think of when they think of an amplifier - they have both a pre and power amplifier in a single chassis. Features vary, but you generally find a few inputs on the back, speaker outputs and a volume control. Most people tend to start with an integrated amplifier, but many high end systems still keep all the amplification in one box.

  • Rotel A14 MK II

This unit is very similar to the previous generations the big difference being the change in DAC from an AKM to a Texas instruments DAC. This change has not surprisingly coincided with the large fire at the AKM factory in Japan that has decimated stocks of AKM parts.

So reading between the lines, this was a change that was forced upon Rotel. Not that the Texas instruments DACs are bad or there's a decrease in performance. Just that, yes, they're slightly different. Rotel has held true to its sound signature though and tweeked things so they still sound fundamentally like Rotel.

Who knows, maybe when AKM stocks become available again we'll have the 'A14 Revisited'

  • Marantz PM7000N stereo amplifier with streaming and DAC

We've always sold Marantz stereo amplifiers at Carlton Audio Visual. From the beginning when Rab acquired stock from another failed retail outfit, that he used to work for. Marantz has been part of the inventory and unlike other brands that leave us once ownership and manufacturing standards change, Marantz stays with us. For thirty years it's been consistently reliable, consistently musical, consistently up to date with the latest connections.

The PM7000N is the lovechild of a throuple of the PM6007amplifier, a Heos Link, and a decent digital to analogue converter.

Connections on this unit include phono for a Turntable, Optical and Coaxial for digital sources like a TV, USB, subwoofer, outputs for two sets of speakers and most importantly streaming capabilities (via Heos built-in). And sure there are other amps that have similar set of connections with Phono and a selection of digital inputs forming the basis of many stereo integrated amps these days, but they don't normally have streaming built in. For another class AB amp with such a spec sheet you could look at the Naim Uniti Atom  ($4995) or the Class D Cambridge Audio Evo 150 ($4299) but the Marantz has a richness in the sound that others lack.

A cello sounds full deep and resonating, like a cello should. And female vocalists like Hannah Reid from London Grammar don't become shrill when the volume goes up a bit.

At just below the $2K mark, this is a solid offering and a must-listen for those wanting a do-it-all amplifier.

  • Musical Fidelity M2si integrated amplifier

When you need an authoritive amp, plenty of power, that isn't going to compromise on warmth, this is THE ONE. Typically, this is the amp people walk away with when they're prepared to sit down and spend time listening through our range. Especially if you have speakers that are a little on the difficult side. There's no other amp in this price bracket that's as versatile to match with different speakers, as this one.

137W into 4Ohms is a considerable heft especially for this price point. Musical Fidelity has not always made a full size integrated at this price point and it's become a Must-listen for customers.

  • Rega Elex R amplifier ... paragon product

The Elex R is made in the English Rega factory and is one of the best buys available for a real stereo amp that one would justifiably expect to last a generation or two in a family. In this business we get to make snap product judgments on the way a device feels in our hands when we take it out of the box.

The particular first impression I got from the Elex was a sense of Deja Vu that put me back in the Imperial War Museum and being given a slab of 40mm armour from a Tiger Tank. It is quite remarkably solid and in fact on the hi-fi component inertia scale is possibly the highest scoring item ever ....

  • Rotel RA-1572 MkII amplifier; A new version of an old favourite

The RA1572 has become a mainstay on the demo floor at Carlton Audio Visual and the new RA1572 MkiII is stepping easily into its void.

A solid and popular performer that pulls the punches when it's asked. With 120W into 4 Ohms and 200W into 8 Ohms of pure Class AB amplification, you'll get slam and control with this amp.

Its connectivity and versatility is also its major strength. Aptx Bluetooth, phono stage (for direct compatibility with a Turntable), Unbalanced and Balanced XLR analogue inputs, multiple optical & coaxial digital connections and PC-USB with MQA and MQA studio (driver installation required) are some of your options.

From the old RA1572, the major difference in the new unit is it's new DAC. Instead of the older AKM DAC chips they've moved to the Texas Instruments Burr-Brown DAC chips. Giving them the MQA capability but also some extra richness and expression in the music on the digital side of things.

It keeps its classic ever-so-popular aesthetic with the retro lines and the same sound signature that Rotel are renowned for which we think is a good thing. A little tweak on an old favourite to make it that much better.

  • Naim Nait 5Si Integrated Amplifier

Naim Nait 5Si is the latest iteration of an amplifier 30 years in the making. Naim is an iconic british HiFi brand that continues its 40 year legacy of design and manufacture in Salisbury, U.K. The very first NAIT amplifier was built at a time when Mr. Tiefenbrun of Linn Acoustics was proclaiming that all that matters in a HiFi system is your source, namely your turntable. For the purest reconstruction of pace, rythym and timing one needed to perfect the source of the electronic signal path and then keep everything as simple as possible through the amplifier and speakers which inherently (according to Tiefenbrun) don't have much impact on the sound.

At this time, there was an effort to frame the amplifier in a marketable sense as just something that outputed current but wasn't part of the HiFi craftmanship and nuanced engineering that really created a true HiFi experience.

Although I'm appreciative of how much of a difference fantastic source material makes to a HiFi system (I even own a Linn Sondek Turntable) my experience and those of countless other HiFi shoppers would indicate that the amplifiers and speakers control an enormous amount in terms of what one hears musically out of a system. And given in this day and age when many of us own multiple HiFi sources (Turntable, CD player and streamer), switching between them and keeping our amplifier and speakers constant, it's more important to get your amplifier and speaker combination right.

And Naim sought to redirect this discourse, marketing the NAIT as a delicate piece in the HiFi system capable of transforming your musical experience. They even went so far as to refuse to publish the output values of the amplifier in an attempt to get people to think about the musical qualities of a unit rather than merely to compare its Watts with another unit. Alas, we still cling to comparing each amplifier by its rated watts which can be a wholly unhelpful exercise - that is an essay for another time!

But I digress, we should be talking about the Nait 5Si! A faithful and timeless amplifier that it is, it delivers a crisp sound that's not full of colouration but will add excitement and a sense of immediacy to the music.

With its ultimate built-quality, unique Denon technologies and state-of-the-art connectivity, the PMA-1600NE truly is a masterpiece of sound technology. • PimaLuna EVO 100 Tube Integrated Amplifier

This is the baby integrated tube amplifier from PrimaLuna. A solid tube amplifier utilising EL34 Tubes but because of its auto-biasing circuitry these can be easily swapped out for something like the KT88s to give a different flavour.

Auto-Biasing is not only about the convenience of swapping out different tubes, it's also about making sure the amp is consistently sounding and performing the way it should.

Don't be fooled by the relatively low Wattage output of a PrimaLuna amp. Yes, 40Watts for a $3395 amp doesn't sound like alot...but these are capable of powering some of our most power hungry speakers and doing it better than amps with more Watts.

How is that possible? Even though the amount of Watts is relatively small the amount of current is large. Also a very low noise floor amplifier is created by using shielding around the toroidal transformer within the chassis.

  • Rotel RA1592 MkII, New Version of an Old Favourite

This new RA1592 MkII quite clearly shows its lineage in its aesthetic and its build. But there are a couple of things that have elevated the design to new levels.

They now use the Burr-Brown or otherwise now known as Texas Instruments DAC chips as well as changing the internals up a bit as well with elements filtering down from Rotels new flagship Michi range. But for those who have always loved the curved retro lines of the 15 series, nothing has changed.

It also keeps its versatility in connectivity. Basically it has a connection for anything you can think of...APTX Bluetooth, 3 optical ins, 3 coaxial ins, PC-USB, USB on the front panel specifically for iOS, MM phono stage, headphone amplifier and Balanced and Unbalanced Analogue inputs.

Its a convenient all-in-one box serious integrated amp.

AND importantly it's a juicy amp with ever so much control and precision. And it's just gotten better and better. Commanding on the speakers yet a sweetness and expression to the sound that marks it above the lesser amps in Rotels range.
