Phono Preamplifiers

The signals coming out of your turntable are the most delicate of audio sources. A Phono Preamp or Phono Stage takes these tiny signals and boosts them into something more robust for your amplifier to work with. A great phono stage will bring you detail and dynamics without adding noise and hiss.

  • Pro-Ject Phono Box E Phono Preamplifier

Most of today's amplifiers are built without a specific phono cartridge input. The Phono Box E is an ideal phono preamplifier for these hi-fi systems, accepting MM cartridges. The analogue output of the Phono Box E can easily be connected to the line-input of your amplifier.

  • Rega Fono Mini A2D

A very useful little phono stage that doesn't choke the richness of your vinyl.

One of my pet peeves is when people have a fairly good turntable set up but are using a very sub par phono stage. Often the most cost effective upgrade is a stand alone phono stage.

Lesser phono stages will bring in an edge to the vinyl sound. We all put so much value on Vinyl because of its inherently analogue sound devoid of the brittleness of digital. So please, no need to spend the earth but a good quality phono stage, like this one, is well worth it!

  • Rega Fono MM Mk5

This is the new version of the what has been one of our best selling phono stages. At sub $500 there is not another phono stage that sounds better. It is simply in a class of its own. We regularly put this phono stage up against units more than double its price and customers come away scratching their heads asking why the rest even bother!

It's just that much better. It's quieter, letting you hear more detail, it's still musical and rich sounding not adding artificial harshness that many of 'the others' do.

    A go-to and a personal favourite.

  • Rega Fono MC Mk4 Moving Coil Phono Stage

A moving coil catridge is a tough thing to amplifiy. They are very low level electrical output and come in a very broad range of loadings and capacitances. However a properly set moving coil cartridge is one of the most rewarding musical experiences and should be the end game for a vinyl enthusiast.

The Fono MC Mk4 is an exceptionally high quality MC phono stage designed to maximise the potential of any MC cartridge.

Although specifically to compliment the latest Rega range of  moving coils you will find full adjustability for loading is available via dip switches conveniently placed on the rear panel with two different gain settings located on the back panel making the Fono MC compatible with most low output MC cartridges.

  • Pro-Ject Phono Box S3 B

Some lovely features on this phono stage that punches above its weight for its price.

RCA and balanced connections along with a discrete and symetrical gain stage.

This unit can take Moving Magnet cartridges but to get the most out of it, it is best to have a Moving Coil.

We see this unit as a good option for those starting out in their Moving Coil juorney.

Pro-Ject is producing this new range of phono stages that are fully balanced and with discrete circuitry. Normally these features were exclusive to the market above $1000 but it is now trickling down into the sub $1000 range.

A great option that won't break the bank and an upgrade in the circuitry from the SB 3 phono box. This is cleaner sounding than the SB 3.

  • Pro-Ject Phono Box RS

A versatile phonostage that is great value for what it does.

We love our vinyl at Carlton Audio Visual and we have some very fancy phono stages for people who want the best experience possible from their cartridge and their turntable setup. This phono stage doesn't fall into the super fancy category but it will take you to the beginning of the good stuff in vinyl. Mainly because it gives the Moving Coil option and all the adjustability that generally only the much more expensive phono stages will get you.

Of note as welll, it has both balanced and unbalanced connections. Another feature generally only seen in quite high end units.

  • Musical Fidelity MX-VYNL

The MX-VYNL is a fully balanced, very high performance phono stage, able to operate with virtually any moving coil or moving magnet cartridge. With both traditional RCA inputs and our unique XLR fully balanced connection the MX-VYNL can be connected to 2 turntables simultaneously.

The MX-VNYL offers a wide range of input impedance settings for moving coil cartridges as well as several capacitance settings for moving magnet units. Unlike many of our competitors units the MX-VYNL allows easy adjustment of these settings while playing. This allows easy experimentation and tuning to find the optimum setting for all your equipment.

The MX-VYNL also includes our renowned RIAA correction that offers extremely accurate results to beyond 80kHz. That may sound extreme, but there is a good deal of information above 20 kHz that needs correction. If it isn’t corrected, it will show itself as ringing and overshoot.

With both extraordinarily low noise and exceptional overload margin the MX-VYNL can comfortably handle even the most demanding of cartridges and satisfy the most discerning of listeners

  • Rega Aria Mk3 MM/MC Phono Stage

One of our favourite Phono stages that makes a partiularly good synthesis with Rega cartridges. However, it's definitely not to be limited to just the Rega cartridges.

It's a warm sounding phono stage that adds a richness to a system. Like all Rega, it lacks frills but it does what it does ever so well.

If you're after multiple inputs and endless adjustibility, this model may not be the one. But if you're after an excellent phono stage that is a plug-in and forget, the Aria is perfect.

  • Chord Huei Phono Stage

Typically known for their digital products in particular their DACs, Chord has surfaced with a product for all of those Vinyl enthusiasts that are jealous of their friend's aircraft grade aluminium DACs. Like their digital products, the Huei not only has that super cool casing, it also has the pretty LED lights and funky buttons...

...but of course the aesthetics of the Huei aren't the only important thing here!

The Huei is a MM/MC phono stage with all of that tinkering capability for any type of cartridge. Impedance, Gain and Rumble (!) settings are all at your fingertips (coressponding to different coloured lights in the chassis). It also has Balanced outputs for those who are serious about Hi-Fi...and not just the coloured lights...

It produces an incredibly clean sound almost completely devoid of noise floor resolving the image beautifully.

We would recommend it to go with Soundsmith, Rega and Van den Hul cartridges.

  • Cyrus Phono Signature ... one of the very best value Phono stages

We are now making way for the new Cyrus models and still have brand new stock left of these beauties. I'm not even sure how they're going to make these any better. These are hot for the taking. For all those Vinyl lovers, there's not really a better phono stage out there.

Once upon a time Cyrus made a phono stage in called the Phono X, a very adjustable and sensitive line stage for adding a high quality record player to a Cyrus system encasd in their characteristic magnesium alloy chassis. It wasn't cheap, but it was simply fantastic to listen to with a sub zero noise floor and acute but sweet detail presentation.

They stopped making it in fairly short order, acceding to the then prevailing market wisdom that turntables were primitive tech doomed for extinction. Oh how we cried ... and Phono Xs became sought after and highly collectible.

Welcome to 2016 and Cyrus have risen to the call of born again vinyl and released the Phono Signature, and it is fantastic.

  • Musical Fidelity M6x Vinyl, completely balanced Phono Stage

This phono stage hold the incredible electronic pedigree of Musical Fidelity and the M6 range...so it's gotta be good.

It offers three different inputs for those of us who like to swap and change Record players and/or cartridges. And all three inputs have the kind of flexibility of loading and gain that's only found on the very best. In essence, there's not a cartridge out there that the M6 won't be able to handle.

In creating this beauty, Musical Fidelity's main motivation was to create a phono stage that 'got out of the way' of the music. It doesn't aim to add flavour, it aims to be true to the source. And it's achieved that aim and the music comes through in all its sweet sweet glory.

  • PS Audio Stellar Phono Preamplifier

We are Vinyl lovers at Carlton Audio Visual. The people who work here love Vinyl and without exception have a record player at home...most have multiple! Our customers have also held the torch for vinyl through the long dark years of the nineties and early 2000s when most had forgotten about the joys of a Turntable, we had a dedicated and passionate team of clients and staff who loved their LPs. Since then Turntables have become trendy and people have rediscovered why they were loved for so long.

And when customers are at a point in their journey where the lifelong admiration and obsession with vinyl and HiFi has taken hold, we recommend the Stellar Phono Stage. It will last a lifetime of cartridge upgrades and swaps. It will extract the most out of a $8499 cartridge (Van den Hul Crimson Stradivarius MC is a sensational pairing with this unit) as it will with a $500 Moving Magnet cartridge.

You'll hear control, detail and presence; There's a spatial awareness in the sound and transparency that reveals itself when you plug this into any system. And it performs well above its pay grade. We really believe to better this you'll have to pay $17K for some Audio Research gear and hell...even then, I'd say some people will still prefer this phono stage for it's clarity in the mid range.

The only thing that we find annoying about it...it requires a remote control to operate. You'll need that in the very first instance to turn its mute off in order to get any sound. And then of course all its plethora of settings that give it such versatility for all cartridges are adjusted on the remote. So don't...like us...loose the remote! *

Also, you need to be patient with this machine and run it in. It really is night and day the difference that makes. We even have some Blue Horizon RIAA filters to use as burn in tools on new units so you don't have to put hours on your cartridge burning in the phono stage. We can do that in store for free, for you.

  • PrimaLuna Evo 100 Tube Phono Stage

A serious Tube Phono preamplifier for serious HiFi enthusiasts.

This is one of those units that are great value. They are hand built units that pay attention to the important stuff but aren't afraid to skimp on some things in order to keep units affordable.

For example this phono stage uses point-to-point wiring that's normally only available on the highest priced units. It uses premium parts like ceramic tube sockets, Nichicon and DuRoch capacitors, 5AR4 tube-rectifier-circuitry and gold-plated, panel mounted RCA input and output jacks.

But it doesn't go silly with controls and features. Keeping things simple, keeps costs down and sound quality high.

  • Chord Symphonic Moving Coil Phonostage

Nestling in the Choral range, the Symphonic is our flagship MC phono stage, offering a range of advanced features over the entry-level Dual.  The high-performance Symphonic uses our latest high-frequency power supply technology to exploit vinyl’s full potential, along with many new key features, to bring the performance levels in line with the Choral range, home of the DAVE DAC/preamp.

The Symphonic offers an almost infinite number of input impedance and gain options as well as balanced and unbalanced input options to the cartridge, making it a highly flexible device for integrating high-quality turntables into Chord systems. The comprehensive settings options are all externally selectable, with selections signified internally with illuminating LEDs.

A rumble filter removes unwanted low-frequency rumble signals appearing on both channels. The Symphonic Phono stage conforms to the RIAA curve without the IEC roll-off when the Rumble filter is set to ‘off’ Preamps: CPA 2500, CPA 3000, CPA 5000, and CPA 8000. Preamps: CPA 2500, CPA 3000, CPA 5000, and CPA 8000.; this is commensurate with the high calibre of Chord amplification. The IEC curve response can be added by setting the Rumble filter to ‘on’. According to the wiring of the tone arm on the turntable used, the Symphonic can be operated in either an unbalanced or balanced mode.
