When they build these record players in the factory in Southend in the U.K there is a man whose sole job is to assemble the tonearm bearing and he sets the tolerance on the tonearm to below one Micron. No other manufacturer engineers their budget record players so extremely by hand ... or comes even close to the Rega engineering tolerances at this price level.

This is simply the best budget turntable ... ever ... and they have made it look and feel so good.

The unique factory that builds these by hand in England has never advertised and never borrowed money. They are a law unto themselves and have only one aim which is simply to allow people to have the best music in their homes for the least money and the longest time.

Constructionally this is a device of extreme simplicity but exacting tolerances and critical use of materials. Roy Gandy (the founder and where the company name comes from) is all about building sensitive vibration measurement machines.

I used to play a game with millenials when I would show them the platter of the earlier model RP1 and say that if they could tell me what it was made of that I would give them the record player for free. I don't do it anymore ...

The platter is actually made of bakealite and is all part of the Mr Gandy's principle of building the turntable as a vibration sensing instrument. Most people associate it with Radios and Telephones from the thirties and forties, it is uniquely appropriate in this engineering context and is a far better solution than the cheap alloy and MDF normally used as the platter material iin budget turntables.

Rega suspect that they actually lose money on every Planar 1 that they make. But these are people who are less of a rationalist manufacturing concern and are actually closer to a cult.

They are on a mission and when you visit the factory you can feel it in the air. The people who set the bearings treat each RB110 Planar 1 tonearm with the same precision and skill as they do the ones from turntables costing ten times as much.

Every single aspect of the Planar 1 has been meticulously designed to improve performance. For the first time the Planar 1 is now running a 24v, low noise, synchronous motor to reduce vibration transfer combined with the brand new RB110 tonearm fitted with Rega's bespoke zero play bearings. Only sharing the drive belt, sub platter and dust cover from the outgoing RP1.

If you are looking to get back into vinyl and want serious performance that will last you a lifetime, then look no further.

Shipping on these items will be standard delivery. If you want expedited shipping, an option should be available at checkout.

We try to dispatch all goods within 48 hours however from time to time the stock in store runs out before we have a chance to update the website. In these cases we will contact you if the item will take longer than 48 hours to be dispatched.

We strongly suggest that items are shipped to a business address, or an address where someone can sign for the delivery. On checkout you have the option of choosing Authoirty to Leave. This will not require a signature, but goods will be left at your premise and the delivery company will take no responsibility for them beyond this point.
