The new OLED A90J Sony is one of the brightest OLED TVs that one can buy at the moment. OLED TV stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode and effectively means that each individual LED can switch itself completely off vs the LED TVs where there's alway a residual light source because the individual LEDs can't completely switch off.
This makes OLED blacker which gives a real kick and pop to the colour but also makes them overall darker....not so good when you'd like to have some beers watching Carlton beat Collingwood in an AFL grand final....what can I say, we're Carlton fans and believe it'll happen again one day...more likely sooner on the womens side! Anyway for such situations, TV brightness in well-light areas is key and the A90J has ramped up the brightness like no other OLED TV has done thus far. But just simply looking at this unit compared with the cheaper X80 series when they're switched off, it lacks the ultra reflective plasticyness of the X80 series.
Having said that, the X80 series offers incredible value for money for an Aussie home looking for a unit with all the built-in apps and functionality that are present in the higher end models but not after that blistering, sharp picture quality. A 55" comes in at $1295, a 65" at $1695.
Then there's the Goldilocks. Not too much, not too little. The A80J OLED TVs. Here we don't have the huge new and improved brightness of the A90J and the picture doesn't bubble and pop as much. But it has that Sony ease of use and has that nice sleek bezel like the A90J. It does miss out on the feet adjustment of the A90J though which let the TV sit perfectly flat on a benchtop.p>
The A80J comes in 55" ($2495), 65" ($3495), 77" ($5995)
