Earlier this year Sharp demonstrated their prototype 33 mega pixel screen. At the moment this represents the highest res single panel display that may be demostrated as a broadcast format for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
The device utilses so called UV2A technology – Ultraviolet induced multi-domain Vertical Alignment, which apparently precisely manipulates the alignment of liquid crystal molecules in the LCD panel .... Ultra HDTV is expected to be available in 2020. As a format it offers no less than 24 channels of digital audio and requires massive bandwidth and infrastructure quite beyond current broadcast capabilities. In the real world we expect Sharp to release a for-Australia version of their 70 inch Quattron panel in November for about $6K that would make it the largest mass market TV available. Of course they do have a 108 inch product already available to those with Lamborgini depth pockets ....
