Audio Research D-80 Tube Power Amp

The Audio Research D-80 is the kind of amplifier that makes audiophiles start talking about “air” with a straight face. Two KT150s per channel, fully balanced differential circuitry and a full-pentode design conspire to produce a soundstage with suspiciously good spatial hygiene, dense colours and bass that behaves like it has somewhere important to be. The D-80 borrows heavily from the Reference 80S, then throws just enough engineering restraint at the recipe to make it considerably less financially terrifying.

And then there’s the auto-bias, actively doing the obsessive-compulsive housekeeping while you sit there pretending you’re listening to the music rather than analysing the decay of a ride cymbal in the back-left corner. Balanced XLR inputs, 4/8/16 Ohm taps and a fully balanced output stage mean the D-80 is unapologetically serious about getting the signal from preamp to loudspeaker without wandering off to buy a scented candle. Built and individually auditioned in Minnesota, it has that rare Audio Research trick: making tubes, transformers and electrical engineering sound less like technology and more like someone has secretly removed a pane of glass from between you and the recording.
