The Quartet represents the most significant advancement in digital audio technology in Chord Electronics’ history and is designed to make digital audio feel more natural, rather than more impressive. Its Blackbird WTA filter tackles the tiny timing errors that can soften the leading edge of notes and transients, giving music a sense of greater focus, space and immediacy. The result is less about hearing a particular piece of technology at work and more about the performance itself seeming to settle into place. Five Xilinx FPGAs provide the considerable processing power required, while the two-box design and RF-rejecting power supply keep the delicate digital circuitry isolated from unwanted interference. There is a lot going on under the bonnet, but the experience is remarkably straightforward: cleaner timing, greater clarity and a more convincing sense of musicians playing in a real space.

The Quartet is also rather more versatile than its name might suggest. Its built-in Pulse Array ADC means analogue sources, including a good turntable, can be brought into the digital domain and benefit from the same sophisticated processing, making it an intriguing addition to both digital and vinyl-based systems. With USB-B, optical and dual BNC connectivity, and support for resolutions up to 768kHz, it is designed to work happily with Chord's range of DACs, including DAVE. Ultimately, Quartet is for the listener who wants to extract even more from an already serious system — not by adding flavour, but by allowing more of the original recording's timing, texture and atmosphere to come through.

Main Features & Specifications

  • All the info on the Chord Electronics Quartet
  • Design: Reference Grade Digital UpSampler
  • Advanced Proprietary Blackbird WTA Filter: Utilises the most advanced interpolation algorithm to deliver a tenfold improvement in transient timing accuracy.
  • Five Xilinx FPGAs: Features massive processing capability with 3,700 DSP cores running over two million lines of proprietary code.
  • Hardware-Level Processing: All digital filtering is implemented directly in hardware, completely avoiding the timing errors caused by software FFT convolution shortcuts.
  • Integrated Pulse Array ADC: The first Chord Electronics upscaler to accommodate analogue sources (such as turntables) via RCA inputs, eliminating traditional aliasing distortion through advanced decimation filtering.
  • Two-box Architecture: Separates the sensitive audio circuitry from a dedicated power supply featuring a proprietary pinch-off RF filter architecture to reject mains-borne noise.
  • 108-bit Lossless Digital EQ: A ten-shelf equalisation system providing ±18 dB of adjustment across frequencies with zero degradation of signal quality.
  • Comprehensive Digital Connectivity: Equipped with isolated USB-B, optical in, BNC in and dual BNC outputs supporting maximum resolution up to 768 kHz (optimised for pairing with the DAVE DAC).
  • Programmable Latency: Offers selectable delay from 10 milliseconds to three seconds to ensure perfect lip-sync during audio-visual playback.
