The Onkyo A-50 takes a rather serious approach to the business of making music, while keeping the outside pleasantly understated. Its three-stage Inverted Darlington amplifier delivers high-current, low-distortion performance, with Onkyo’s DIDRC circuitry helping to reduce the high-frequency noise associated with digital sources. A premium 32-bit/768kHz stereo DAC also makes it equally comfortable with modern digital listening.

Much of the A-50’s appeal is in the engineering you don’t immediately see. A rigid 5mm extruded aluminium front panel, oval-reinforced chassis, copper bus bar and substantial 10,000μF capacitors provide a solid foundation, while the fanless design keeps operation reassuringly quiet. It’s a sophisticated two-channel amplifier with the looks to match — refined rather than flashy and built for serious listening without making a song and dance about it.
