Onkyo Y-50 Network Integrated Amplifier

The Onkyo Muse Y-50 takes the rather sensible approach of putting serious amplification, streaming and system connectivity under one roof. Its full-digital Axign Class-D amplifier with MOSFET output delivers up to 250 watts per channel into 4 Ohms, giving it plenty of authority for demanding floorstanders as well as more modest speakers. Built-in streaming covers Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, AirPlay 2 and Chromecast, with Wi-Fi and Ethernet providing the connection. There’s also a generous selection of inputs, including MM/MC phono, analogue RCA, coaxial digital, USB and HDMI ARC, making the Y-50 equally at home with a turntable, television, games console or high-resolution music library.

There’s a pleasing sense of purpose to the Y-50, too. The aluminium front panel, substantial chassis and distinctive San Kuzushi-patterned ventilation give it a refined Japanese character, while the 5.46-inch colour display adds a touch of modern theatre with track information, system status and an analogue-style VU meter. Onkyo’s room calibration helps tailor the sound to your listening space, and pre-out and subwoofer connections leave room for future expansion. For anyone wanting a powerful, modern stereo system without filling the room with separate boxes, the Y-50 makes a remarkably convincing case for keeping things together.
