Key differences between the Bravia 9 II and Bravia 7 II.

Sony’s new True RGB panel technology gives both the Bravia 9 II and 7 II a considerable step forward in colour accuracy and brightness over the previous models. The 9 II is the more accomplished performer, however, with significantly higher peak brightness (4,000 nits), making it particularly well suited to HDR content and brighter viewing rooms. The 7 II (2000 nits) retains much of the same picture quality but will not fare quite so well in bright rooms.

The biggest practical difference comes with glare and viewing angles. The Bravia 9 II adds Sony’s more sophisticated backlight control, Immersive Black Screen Pro and X-Wide Angle Pro, along with a premium anti-glare layer. The result is better contrast and colour consistency when viewed off-axis or in a room with plenty of daylight. The 7 II does without these refinements, although its colour accuracy, motion handling, calibration and overall picture quality remain remarkably close.

Sound is the final distinction. Both models use Sony’s Acoustic Multi-Audio+ system to give dialogue greater clarity and create a more convincing sense of space, but the Bravia 9 II goes further with eight speakers and 80W of system power, compared with four speakers and 40W in the 7 II. In short, the 9 II offers the full-fat experience; the 7 II keeps most of the good stuff while being a little kinder to the wallet.
