Wharfedale
Wharfedale Wireless Works was founded in 1932 by Gilbert Briggs after he built his first loudspeaker in the cellar of his Ilkley, Yorkshire home in the Wharfedale valley. From this unlikely market town sprang a brand synonymous with high-fidelity quality worldwide. Wharfedale gained early renown for innovation—introducing the world’s first two-way speaker in 1945 - and, after sale to the Rank Organisation in 1958 (with Briggs managing until 1965), pioneered technologies such as the roll surround and ceramic-magnet drivers. Production expanded through the 1970s with popular models like the Lintons and Dentons, and in 1981 the compact Wharfedale Diamond speaker launched a long-running, best-selling range.
Over more than 90 years, Wharfedale has continued to push loudspeaker performance, backing advanced R&D with an integrated 1.5 million square-foot manufacturing operation where design, engineering, and quality control are all handled in-house. This vertical approach lets Wharfedale engineer components from scratch rather than relying on off-the-shelf parts, enabling cohesive design and finely tuned acoustic balance across their product lineup.
