  • Yamaha NS-800A speakers with Zylon drive units

The Yamaha NS-800A speakers have just landed at Carlton Audio Visual. We've had them running in and stretching their wings in the main demo space.

The NS-800A feature the same innovative cabinet design as the top of the range NS-5000 speakers. That is to say that instead of packing the insides of the cabinet with acoustically absorbing material like foam, Yamaha uses their 'absorber tubes'. These don't completely dampen the sound rather they keep a freshness and pep to the music.

Even without being fully run-in, these speakers are exciting, forward and immeadiate. They don't quite have all the pep of the NS-5000s but that's to be expected given that the NS-5000s are nearly triple the price.

They also don't feature the Zylon drivers of the NS-5000s having instead a pulp (paper) mix in the driver. The Zylon evidently works to give the higher range of speakers extra punch and attack.

But the lineage is still clear and if you love that Yamaha pure and fast sound, you're going to love these.

What I've also noticed is unlike a lot of bookshelf speakers, the mid-range is still quite present with the NS-800a. They are quite consistent throughout the frequency sweep and don't show the characteristic hole in the mids which plagues many a lesser set of bookshelves.

You won't be dissapointed by their bass either. Rich and full. Surprising for a bookshelf speaker, even one like this, that is on the larger side. But more importantly articulation and attack are not lost in the bass either. This can be another pitfall of less efficient bookshelves that find it difficult to articulate bass lines and give you more wooliness than crispness.

  • REL S/812

Sometimes in this industry companies will bring out a new model or range and you get the sense that the main purpose for said range is to put in some cost cutting measures in the components, dress it up in a new faceplate and charge more...needless to say we steer clear of such brands...

REL's new S series is the antithesis of that. In fact they've packed so much more value into these Subs we just couldn't wait to get our hands on them. More power (800 Watts) with new amplification modules, better damped and faster drivers, options to stack and daisy chain your Subs to build the ultimate Sub tower....who wouldn't want that...!

They've also built on their incredible sense of musicality and 'ear to detail' with filters that ensure the superior musical reproduction of the higher frequencies. Where the older S series faltered a little, if anywhere, was in its Home Theatre capabilities. This new version has dealt with that impeccably...more dynamics and higher intensity mean when something blows up on screen, you're gonna feel that rumble...

  • Sumiko Blue Point Special EVO III Low Output

The Blue Point Special EVO iii is where the Sumiko cartridges start to come into their own. With sensational treble quality that floats in an inky blackness. When you move up to something like the Blackbird you hear these qualities too but just more realism, detail and presence.

If you'd like something good but not 'overkill', the Blue Point Evo iii in either low or high output is precise and musical.

For some Turntables including Regas, we will need to fit a 2mm spacer on you tonearm for this cartridge. Like the HiFi Guru Spacer

Now the new SignatureX XLR cables are here, we are able to run some fantastic deals on the run-out models.

Using identical conductors for signal and return is a very easy was of improving the performance of an audio cable – something we’ve been doing for many years. With many XLR cables, the two signal wires end up being used to carry the hot (in phase) and the cold (out of phase) signals, while the earth/return connection is made with the shield.

  • Analysis Plus Solo Crystal Oval 0.5M RCA or XLR

Using a conventional round cable is like pouring fine wine through a lead pipe. What comes out is definitely not what went in. Continuous Cast Copper (SoloCrystal Copper) braids with the patented oval design, puts nothing in the way of the musical signal.

The sound is detailed and resolving and lacks the sharpness of sibilant highs that are so easily accentuated in many other high end cables.

For any system that I'm trying to balance out with a bit of warmth because it would err on the side of brightness, naturally, these are the cables that I reach for paired with some Analysis Plus Oval 9 copper speaker cable.

  • Quadraspire Q4 Evo Bamboo

Price is for 4 Shelf Bamboo Rack.

In the same way as every musical performance needs a stage so a HiFi needs a stage to bring the music to life in your home. Twenty years ago we set out to develop a modular rack – the Q4- that could support a variety of Hi Fi systems and deliver acoustic performance with style. This was achieved by combining solid aluminium columns with specially engineered shelves to create a light and rigid construction to deliver a clearer, cleaner musical performance.

  • Nordost Sort FUT Single Unit

The Sort Füt is a mechanically tuned resonance control device. It is purpose-built to enhance the performance of your hi-fi system and improve upon the standard spikes and stabilizers that are provided with loudspeakers and racks. Energy is an unavoidable byproduct whenever components are in use, creating vibrations which can greatly affect the sound produced. The Sort Füt’s proprietary four-part construction eliminates these unwanted vibrations by providing a direct ground path, allowing extraneous energy to escape from electronics. The result: a reduction in intermodulation distortion, a proliferation of musical information, and an increase of tonal and textural details that will allow your system to achieve the dynamic range it is capable of. • Aluminum and Bronze hybrid construction • Finial Dome to minimize effects of vibration • 3 Ceramic balls (Zr02) to minimize contact surface area while providing physical stability to components • Each unit includes 8mm, 6mm, and 1/4-20 Threaded Adapters • Minimum Height: 69mm Learn More

  • Nordost Sort Kones AC Aluminium with Ceramic Ball Bearing

The Sort Kone is a directly coupled and mechanically tuned resonance control device, using a sophisticated new approach to the problem of supporting sensitive electronics.

Whereas most equipment supports are referred to as Isolation Devices, this actually completely misunderstands the nature of the problem. The most harmful mechanical energy doesn’t enter the equipment from outside; it’s generated internally by the audio circuits and their power supplies. Transformers, power supply capacitors, even the active devices themselves, all vibrate as they operate – and those vibrations occur right where the fragile signal is, creating timing errors that smear and distort the music. The Sort Kone is designed specifically to deal with this threat to audio fidelity.

Sort Kones provide a “blacker” background to your music. With it comes greater focus, instrumental color, depth, transparency and dynamic range. Your system will sound more natural and more lifelike, your music more lively and engaging, the musicians like better musicians – simply because you’ll finally be able to hear the notes they’re playing, the way they play them and precisely when. So, release the hidden performance that’s lurking in your equipment.

    • Three-part construction employs superior materials in a mechanically tuned configuration.
    • Bypasses soft feet fitted to equipment to provide a direct mechanical ground path for internal energy.
    • Can be used in triplets, quartets or even larger numbers.
    • Height: 56mm
    • Four levels of price and performance, depending on materials employed:

AC – aluminum post and base in combination with an upgraded ceramic coupling ball.

  • Van Den Hul MC-One Special

In a range that includes models costing thousands of pounds, the MC One Special is a relatively affordable example. It's a 'selected' version of the MC10 Special, a hand-built cartridge using silver wire coils and a boron cantilever (the tube that connects the stylus to the coils). Because of the relatively wide sample variations with cartridges, it's not unusual for makers to charge a bit more for selected samples of a particular model - ones that are found to perform better than the rest. Grado is another manufacturer that does this - the Prestige Gold on page 46 is a 'selected' version of the Prestige Silver, for which an additional £20 is charged
