The Big Red loudspeakers are some of the most respected, highly lauded Australian made loudspeakers available in the market today. They are the reference set of loudspeakers from Rod Crawford at Legend Acoustics.

Normally they retail for $10K but normally they are an active set of speakers with built-in amplifiers. These particular units, however, have been modified to be passive and to work with a whole slew of separate amplifiers.

They are the height of definition, precision and tonal control going for a very reasonable $4K!

Most people who buy Big Reds keep them for a lifetime. Rarely do any come on the secondhand market and certainly not in this passive configuration.

They do not come with their boxes and shipping long distances interstate unfortunately won't be possible for these beauties. However talk to us if you live in NSW. Sometimes we travel up the Hume for deliveries, we could potentially work something out. That goes for rural VIC as well.

The Hegel H190 amplifier is a simple to use product with an emphasis on audio quality.

Hegel has become popular quite quickly in HiFi circles for good reason. This Scandinavian electronics company make solid, hefty amplifiers with a big rich sound that is not dry or plain.

We've been quickly very impressed by this amplifier. As well as being just a good sounding amp, it has all the srious streaming capabilities built-in as well.

The Leema Antila is a classic CD player. Resolving articulate yet deeply and engagingly musical. 

This is a briliant opportunity to buy our old Ex-Demo stock at a great price. Because this was such a winning formula, Leema haven't changed much in their new version of the the Antila.

There are a few marks and scratches on the unit which is to be expected for a much loved piece of gear that has spent a number of years on the demo floor.

The price of this unit reflects the aesthetic marks on the unit. We have tried to take pictures of all of the slight blemishes.

A serious Tube Phono preamplifier for serious HiFi enthusiasts.

This is one of those units that are great value. They are hand built units that pay attention to the important stuff but aren't afraid to skimp on some things in order to keep units affordable.

For example this phono stage uses point-to-point wiring that's normally only available on the highest priced units. It uses premium parts like ceramic tube sockets, Nichicon and DuRoch capacitors, 5AR4 tube-rectifier-circuitry and gold-plated, panel mounted RCA input and output jacks.

But it doesn't go silly with controls and features. Keeping things simple, keeps costs down and sound quality high.

If you're after exceptional sound quality for a fraction of the cost, then these are for you.

There is damage to these speakers, hence the price. Take a look at the pictures of the units in the images. It is only superficial damage and does not affect the sound quality at all.

On the face of it, the new Contour range from Dynaudio looks very similar to the old range and in alot of ways they are. But why wouldn't they want to be? The Contour range has been extraordinarily popular and a hallmark of craftsmanship and musicality.

All of that is evident in the new series but there are things under the hood that have changed. Most notably the upgraded tweeter that has a larger rear chamber delivering better damping and therefore a cleaner sound and an even flatter frequency response.

Pair these with an amplifier with considerable juice and grit - we'd suggest trying a Rega Aethos or a Musical Fidelity M6si - and you've got a seriously good system that will make the toughest audiophiles swoon.

We are preparing for the arrival of new models of marantz SA CD players and as such it is time to sell our demo units of the current stock. This particular unit is Black and in great condition. It comes with box and accessories and a three year factory warranty.

Marantz CD players have often been the port of last call for that particular customer that is searching for music in a digital realm where everything measures well but is post apocalyptically sterile to the listening. There is also that small but significant in our fanatics base of people for whom SACD is the only answer. And for them these high end Marantz players are the go to product for real quality and realisation of the potential of the format.

This new piece of kit has been voiced and refined by the Marantz dream team sound engineers and is an excellent external Digital to Analogue Converter for your other digital sources.

A ultra classy refined set of Headphones. It's hard to find anything bad to say about these. Except that there's now a new and improved better version with the Emprean Elite. But we were scratching our heads wondering what they could possibly do to make these any better.

The sound is detailed and precise but will let loose with kick and punch if you give them half a chance. The Soundstage is truly enormous and the quality of the finish is impeccable. 

The people who make these are Romanians and the engineers that have developed their special Isodynamic Hybrid Array Driver are Polish. Two former eastern block countries who are now part of the EU and obviously have oodles of talent to produce some of the best Headphones in the world. 

The Isodynamic driver is a variation of a Planar Magnetic driver done with a dual shaped voice coil array that makes them super light weight and super responsive. And you can definitely hear that responsiveness of the Empyreans over other Planar Magnetic designs.

The lightness in the driver makes them incredibly comfortable to wear for long periods of time as well.

If this was an asteroid on its to hit the planet then it may well cause the extinction of the mammals. At 50kg it is one of the most massive single box amplifiers that I have ever encountered and is gorgeous.

First encounter was playing it through a pair of Dynaudio Confidence 60 sourced by a Marantz SA10. Fresh out of the box the Michi X5 lacks the glare and oft harsh treble of many of the super amplifier designs without being salubrious like a Musical Fidelity X8i. It has needless to say terrific poise with no overhang or bloom on these critical speakers and an instant rendition of space that is immensely gratifying.

I dived straight in with Patti Smith Horses and her raw proto punk seventies energy was immaculately recreated with this powerhouse running the system. 

The amplifier is physically gorgeous, although some may find the black looks unsettling. In use it is both tactile and entertaining. The new Michi Trademark display that suddenly illuminates in the panel is excellent fun.

Loewe started manufacturing Televisions in 1923 and actually made the first commercially available Television. After a few years of being manufactured in other European countries, they're now back being produced and headquartered in Kronach, Germany's heartland.

I visited Kronach and the Loewe factory in 2015. Kronach is a tiny town for German standards and its industry and in fact it's whole economy has been dominated by Loewe for generations. Most people who live in Kronach work or have worked in the Loewe factory. When I was there, there were multiple generations of the one family working side by side to exacting standards on the Televisions. All of this in what is a Storybook looking town with old wooden houses and a medieval castle on the hill.

Loewe Televisions, like premium German made motor vehicles, contain a workmanship and attention to detail above their Asian made counterparts. Machine engineered alloy bezels, cable management systems, intuitive remote and interface and swivel stands that come as standard are the details that don't come with other Televisions.

The Bild V is elegant, yet solid and robust to out live most of its contempories.

The picture quality, as you'd expect with a Television of this calibre, is bold and expressive without ever seeming artificial. Although it's pitched at replacing the old Bild 5 units, the Bild V has the same panel as the higher end Bild 7 and in substance is much closer in spec to those.

This is THE Turntable that sits pride of place in the reference system here at Carlton Audio Visual. To put this first into context, our reference system consists of the Sonus Faber Flagship Aida 2 Speakers, Audio Research 160M Monoblocks & Ref 6 Pre-amp with a matching CD9SE CD player and PH9 phono stage. This is it...

Even though we have an extensive range of turntables, we still didn't have the right one for this system. 

It wasn't until Rab went to Munich High-End Hi-Fi show and sat down and listened to the Acoustic Signature's range, that he found THE ONE. He said the Invictus (@ c. $275,000 AUD) was the best turntable he had ever heard BUT this, the Ascona, holds many of the technical details of the Invictus and would also sit perfectly on our ready to go Basso Continuo rack (Invictus was a liiiittle large). 

Most importantly, the Ascona brings to life an analogue recording like nothing we've ever had in store. The 3D image of the music is papable. When we play Adele's 21, I feel like I can take a step and touch the microphone that she's singing into. 

We made sure to have the TA-9000 Tonearm mounted to this beauty.The TA-9000 is in itself an engineering marvel and I'm not the only person to believe that it is simply the very best tonearm money can buy. They make each of these with a Selective Laser Melting Process Machine millimeter by millimeter so that the inner tube is connected to the outer tubing with a precise tree-branch structure that COMPLETELY does away with resonance effects.

We've finished off the set up with a Van den Hul Crimson Stradivarius cartridge. 

Seeing these for the first time was a bit like that occasion when I was at a party outside of my normal social strata of hippy and bikerdom and the six foot 2 inch Supermodel comes into the room. One is momentarily stunned.
Wheras a Sonus faber Aida evokes a sense of primal wonder at the wooden waveforms embedded in their design, the Dynaudio Confidence 60 is like that graceful alien shape that comes amongst us as a creature of grace and purity. Better than us, more evolved and refined than the merely squalid mortal transducer instruments that the multitude of humanity must settle for.

They sound like that too ... I do not honestly believe that there is a loudspeaker that is more measured and true in its presentation. These are not a simple product a the end of along chain of development. The Confidence 60 is a loudspeaker that misses nothing and adds nothing. It is musical truth in its purest exponent and needs to be listened to if you want to know what those who come after us will be playing their music on ....
