Amazon vs Google

Saturday, 2 March 2024 9:51:00 am Australia/Melbourne

From the point of view of a small medium enterprise like Carlton Audio Visual, the sovereign entities of Google and Facebook have evolved by placing themselves in the way of every consumer and every purveyor in every transaction. The question is ... have they added or subtracted value to consumers and purveyors?

On a busy Saturday afternoon I took a phone call from a gentleman asking if we sold Sennheiser TV headphones … I said not and suggested he contact JB Hi Fi who I knew carried that range … only he told me he had already tried ring JB in Doncaster but hadn’t been able to get through and asked me if I could recommend a store. So I suggested he contact the Bourke st branch where I have found the staff helpful and engaging.

However he then went on to tell me that he had actually purchased the headphones from Amazon for  $100 less than the normal go price and actually was simply looking for help on how to set them up as he was having issues ….

So here is the thing … this perfectly decent consumer was happy to buy the product from a ruthless global entity that launches pointless phallic rockets into the upper atmosphere … and then ring to get setup advice and consultation from bricks and mortar retailers at their peak time and labour cost basis.

"Happy Xmas, War is over" from the album Imagine was recorded by John and Yoko in 1971. For me there is no better modern christmas icon tune that captures the spirit and intent of this paganised memorial of the birth of Christ. In this 21st Century where evangelical charlatans preach prosperity for their followers while a new robotic trench warfare stalks the breadbasket of europe, it seems appropriate to recall Lennon and his raw desire for peace on earth.

Happy Christmas everybody, we are open every day except Christmas and New Years.

The art of streaming by Darren

Saturday, 19 August 2023 6:19:05 pm Australia/Melbourne

Despite the reluctance of a large part of the hi-fi community to embrace the CD initially, we are constantly being told by our customers that it still either constitutes their main or at least a significant portion of their musical diet.

While the advent of MP3s and the resurgence of vinyl seamed to sound the death knell for the Compact Disc as a commercial product, it not only made it to it’s 40th birthday last year but we may see it make it to 50. However, the numbers involved are tiny compared to the market share now enjoyed by internet downloads and music streaming services.
